Al-Barani Mosque is located near Al-Qashla, at the head of the martyrs from the west, and overlooks the Sidon sea castle. This mosque was built during the reign of Emir Fakhr al-Din al-Ma'ni al-Kabir between 1572 and 1635. The reason for calling the mosque after the Barani Mosque, is that it is the first mosque built outside the walls of the city of Sidon, and it is considered small in size. From several sections, the first section is the sanctuary of the mosque, which is considered small in size because its area does not exceed 60 square meters. At the top there is a dome, and it is topped by a stone pulpit, which you can climb to from two directions. The second section is the lobby of the mosque, with an area of about half the area of the sanctuary, and there are two ancient columns in the middle of it. To this day, some of the decorations that date back to the relevant era still appear on the walls of the mosque’s lobby. Only a few of these decorations remained due to the renovations and repairs that the mosque was subjected to. In 1982 the minaret of the mosque was completely destroyed by the Israeli air strikes during the Israeli invasion of Sidon.
